Sourav Ganguly Update: Politics has started in the name of Sourav Ganguly, President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former captain of the team. The ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal has targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party amid reports that Ganguly would step down as the president. The TMC says that the BJP had tried several times to include Ganguly in the party. The party says the former cricketer has become a victim of political vendetta.
TMC leader Dr Shantanu Sen said, ‘Amit Shah had gone to Sourav Ganguly’s residence a few months back. It is known that Ganguly was being repeatedly approached to join the BJP. Maybe he didn’t agree to join BJP and he is from Bengal so he fell victim to political vendetta. The special thing is that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had reached the former cricketer’s house for dinner some time ago.
Earlier too, the party had accused the BJP of “trying to insult” former cricket. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh had said, ‘We are not saying anything directly in this matter. Since the BJP has been running such propaganda after the elections, it is the responsibility of the BJP to respond to such speculations. It looks like BJP is trying to insult Sourav.
what is the matter
There were reports that former Indian cricketer Roger Binny could replace Ganguly. Binny was a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team. He has filed his nomination for the post on Tuesday itself. Chances are being raised that he can be elected unopposed in the annual meeting of the board to be held on October 18.
such fast-paced politics
As soon as the news of Ganguly’s name being dropped from the race for the post of BCCI President came to light, the TMC started attacking the BJP. Sen tweeted, ‘Another example of political vendetta. Amit Shah’s son continued as secretary, but not Sourav Ganguly. Is it because he is from Mamta Banerjee’s state or because he didn’t join BJP? Dada we are with you.
Here, the BJP has denied all allegations that Ganguly is a cricket legend and the BCCI’s decision has nothing to do with politics. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “This is a matter related to the world of cricket and only people associated with cricket can comment on it.” It has nothing to do with politics. TMC did not find any issue to attack BJP and hence it is politicizing it.
BJP National Vice President Dilip Ghosh says, “We do not know when BJP tried to include Ganguly in the party. He is a legend of cricket. Some people are shedding crocodile tears over the changes in BCCI. When he became the BCCI President, did he have any role in it? TMC should stop politicizing every issue.
Speculation continues since a year ago
There has been speculation since 2021 that the BJP was trying to bring Ganguly into the party ahead of the assembly elections. When Ganguly suffered a heart attack in January 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a health update and wished him a speedy recovery. Here, on May 6, Shah and many big leaders of the state BJP reached Ganguly’s residence.
When Ganguly was seen with Mamta
The former cricketer, who is keeping distance from politics, was seen sharing the stage with Mamta Banerjee on 1 September. During that time he had attended a government program. The special thing is that the political rhetoric has intensified due to the return of Shah’s son Jai as the board secretary.
