The initiative taken by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the upcoming presidential election has got the support of the Congress. After Banerjee took the initiative to call a meeting of opposition leaders, she said on Saturday that it was time to rise above mutual differences and elect a person who can protect the Constitution and the institutions of the country.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said in a statement that party president Sonia Gandhi has spoken to NCP chief Sharad Pawar, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and several other leaders of opposition parties regarding the presidential election and in view of being infected with the Korana virus. The responsibility of this conversation has been given to Mallikarjun Kharge.

“The Congress is of the opinion that the country needs a person in the form of President who can protect the Constitution and our institutions which are being attacked by the ruling party,” he said. This is the need of the hour. The Congress has not suggested any name, but it is the responsibility of all of us to elect such a person as the President who can heal the fractured social fabric and protect the Constitution.

Surjewala asserted, “It is time to rise above mutual differences for the sake of the country and the people.” Discussions should take place with an open mind and in that spirit. We believe that Congress and other political parties should take this discussion forward.
